Round Table Discussion with Peter Harris

Peter Harris, Chairman of the Australian Productivity Commission, and a member of the team which devised the economic plan to move Australia away from protectionism in the 1980s and 1990s, visited AUSCHAM for a round table discussion with the heads of different Argentine chambers and representatives of the constituents of AUSCHAM.

Prior to the meeting, Mr. Harris met with the Argentine Ministry of Production. The Argentine government’s National Productivity Plan provides one model for transformation: Australia. Prior to implementing reforms, Australia had the 15th best GDP per capita, today it has the 5th best. A key factor in this rise was the implementation of changes and continuing search for improvement.

Mr. Harris made the point that Australia’s model cannot simply be transplanted to Argentina, but that it would need to find its own way forward, taking into account its own particular circumstances.
